Volunteering at TMC Hospice

Our volunteers play a vital role throughout hospice care by offering patients and families comfort, connection and support when they need it most. Learn what to expect and how to apply to volunteer at TMC Hospice, and join us in meaningful impact on our patients' lives.

Is hospice volunteering right for you?

Hospice volunteering is a meaningful commitment, and reflecting on the following questions can help you understand whether this role aligns with your strengths and values:
  • Do you enjoy working as part of a team?
  • Do you like learning new things and meeting new people?
  • Are you flexible and comfortable adapting to change?
  • Are you responsible and dependable?
  • Do you bring compassion and genuine dedication to the wellbeing of others?
  • Have you made peace with your own mortality?
  • Can you respect perspectives on death and dying that differ from your own?
  • Are you able to maintain healthy boundaries and say “no” when needed?
Hospice volunteering is well-suited for those who thrive in collaborative environments, enjoy connecting with others and approach their work with flexibility, empathy and a sense of humor. To support patients and families in a meaningful way, volunteers need to be comfortable with diverse beliefs on death and dying—but also understand their limits around such topics.
While it may be a difficult, volunteering in hospice is a deeply rewarding experience. It offers a chance to gain a deeper understanding of life and mortality, learn new things, meet new people, and contribute to your community while supporting those who need it most.

Volunteering at TMC Hospice

Volunteers are the heart of TMC Hospice—they give invaluable support and companionship to patients and families. Our volunteers embody our philosophy of compassionate care, enhancing the quality of life for those we serve.
TMC Hospice volunteer philosophy
TMC Hospice's purpose is to improve our patients' and their families' quality of life by being there to care, share, listen, understand, laugh, cry, and love.
Volunteers play an essential role by bringing the outside world to someone who is home-bound; bringing solace and comfort to a patient with a gentle touch, a quiet word or a bright smile.
We all strive to be open to and mindful of the spiritual needs and personal welfare of anyone who is touched by TMC Hospice—including our patients, their friends and family and, just as importantly, ourselves.

What to know before applying
Each application is carefully reviewed. Candidates selected to move forward will be contacted for an interview prior to the next scheduled training. Trainings are held one to two times per year, depending on volunteer needs. Because of this timing, it may take up to six months to receive an update regarding interview selection.
Once accepted into our volunteer program, new volunteers complete our hospice volunteer training, which includes both online and in-person components, as well as a background check and employee health requirements. Because we invest significantly in preparing our volunteers, we ask for a commitment to regular participation. Feel free to email hospicevolsvcs@tmcaz.com with any questions.
