Embracing the role of
a TMC Hospice volunteer

Volunteers are the heart of TMC Hospice, providing invaluable support and companionship to patients and families. Our volunteers embody our philosophy of compassionate care, enhancing the quality of life for those we serve. Here's how volunteers contribute:

Companionship: Volunteers offer a listening ear, a comforting presence, and genuine companionship to patients, brightening their days with smiles and conversation.

Support: Volunteers provide practical assistance with daily tasks and errands, easing the burden on patients and caregivers.

Emotional comfort: Volunteers offer emotional support, empathy, and understanding, creating a nurturing environment for patients and families during challenging times.

Administrative assistance: Volunteers help with administrative tasks, ensuring smooth operations and allowing staff to focus on patient care.

Bereavement support: They offer compassionate support to families during the grieving process, providing comfort and assistance as they navigate their loss.

We value our volunteers' commitment and ask for a long-term dedication to our program, ensuring continuity and reliability in our services. Hospice volunteering is suited for those who enjoy teamwork, learning and meeting new people, with traits like flexibility, compassion and a sense of humor. Volunteers should be comfortable with different perspectives on death and dying, knowing their boundaries while providing invaluable support to those in need.

Comfort shawls

These crocheted or knitted shawls are made with the creator giving blessings and good wishes to those who receive their shawl and the intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. Some recipients have continued the kindness by passing it onto someone else in need of some blessings and comfort but many of the recipients keep them as a treasured keepsake of the time they spent with their loved one in their final daysThere are specific instructions to these shawls and we require certain yarn to be used to ensure they are all soft and comfy for the recipients. Unfortunately, we cannot except any other kind of knitted or crocheted blankets.

Quilts

We accept donations of new handmade quilts that are put on our inpatient unit beds for our patients and families to enjoy. The quilt can often be a treasured keepsake for those families that would like to keep them to remember their loved one. Sometimes our homecare patients are given them as well, they brighten their day and it gives them even more comfort knowing a thoughtful volunteer made it for them. The preferred size is a typical throw size blanket (somewhere around 50”-65”) and sometimes we can take some lap size blankets as well but typically use throw size most. We also love to receive patriotic quilts to gift to our veteran patients.
